What Is Prickly Pear Fruit?

A fruit from the cactus

Prickly pear is the fruit of the Opuntia cactus, a plant adapted to hot, dry climates around the world. It has been enjoyed for centuries in Mexico, Sicily and across the Mediterranean, where cactus fruit has long been valued for refreshment and resilience.

What does prickly pear taste like?

Ripe prickly pear is juicy and lightly sweet, often compared to watermelon with hints of berry. In Cacto it becomes a light, jammy, sparkling drink that is refreshing rather than sugary.

Is prickly pear the same as cactus water?

Cactus water is the everyday name for drinks made from the prickly pear cactus. Cacto is a sparkling prickly pear drink: real Sicilian prickly pear fruit, sparkling water and zero added sugar, in three flavours.

Built for harsh climates

Unlike many modern crops, prickly pear cactus needs very little water to grow and can thrive in harsh environments with minimal irrigation. That makes it an exciting crop for a drier world. Read more in Why Water Matters.
