Why Water Matters

The Magic Cactus

So You've Discovered Cacto...

Hopefully you've enjoyed a delicious can of Cacto and want to learn a little more about why we believe prickly pear is such a remarkable fruit.

For us, Cacto has always been about more than creating a great-tasting soft drink. It started with a simple question:

Can we build a drinks brand around a fruit that's better prepared for the future?

To answer that, we need to talk about water.

The World's Most Valuable Resource

Water covers over 70% of our planet, yet less than 1% is accessible freshwater available for human use.

Despite enormous progress:

  • 1 in 4 people still lack access to safely managed drinking water

  • Over 2 billion people live without reliable access to safe water

  • Agriculture uses approximately 70% of global freshwater withdrawals

As populations grow and climates change, protecting water resources is becoming one of the most important challenges of our generation.

Meet The Prickly Pear

Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) is one of nature's great survivors.

It has evolved to thrive in some of the harshest environments on Earth, growing where many conventional crops struggle.

But what fascinates us most is the transformation.

Using remarkably little water, the plant produces a vibrant fruit that is naturally composed of over 85% water, whilst containing:

  • Electrolytes

  • Fibre

  • Vitamin C

  • Antioxidants

  • Betalains (the pigments responsible for its vibrant colour)

In many ways, prickly pear is nature's way of turning scarce resources into something incredibly refreshing.

Why Is It Different?

Unlike many popular hydration ingredients, prickly pear has evolved specifically for water efficiency.

Through a specialised process called CAM photosynthesis, the plant opens its pores primarily at night, dramatically reducing water loss during the hottest parts of the day.

This allows the cactus to conserve water while continuing to grow and produce fruit.

It's one of the reasons prickly pear is increasingly attracting attention from researchers, farmers and food innovators around the world.

Why We Chose It

Of course, sustainability means very little if something doesn't taste great.

Fortunately, prickly pear delivers both.

It's naturally low in sugar and calories, refreshingly fruity, and comes from a plant that has spent millions of years learning how to do more with less.

We're not claiming prickly pear will solve the world's water challenges.

But we do believe that supporting resilient, resource-efficient crops is part of building a better future for food and drink.

What Can We Do?

The global water challenge won't be solved by one fruit or one company.

But together we can support organisations helping communities gain access to safe drinking water.

A Final Thought

Every food and drink choice has an environmental footprint.

For us, prickly pear represents a small but exciting example of what the future could look like:

Delicious. Nutritious. Resource-conscious.
